Description: Answer: 1. Flat Tire 2. Running out of gas Though breakdowns can happen regardless of how cautious you are, running out of gas is completely preventable. Embarrassing, isn't it? Why bother trying to see how much further your car can go when the gas gauge already reads "EMPTY"? Do yourself a big favor and get some gas. Take the following precautions to make sure your situation doesn't worsen. 1. Whenever possible pull the vehicle to the right hand side of the road. This will get you and the motor vehicle out of the flow of traffic and minimize the chance of causing a serious accident. 2. In most cases it is better to stay with the vehicle depending on road and weather conditions. If your vehicle is likely to be struck by oncoming cars, get out and wait in a safer area such as behind a guardrail. 3. Put on your emergency flashers and keep your hood lifted or have a small readable sign saying, "send help". This will prompt passing motorists to alert police to respond. 4. In the event you have to abandon the car, be sure you secure any valuables and lock the vehicle up. Try to determine exactly where the vehicle is located so that you can direct police and service vehicles to it. 5. Having a Roadside Assistance membership is the best precaution you can take to avoid situations like these. There is always someone on hand to help. Take simple steps to assure you are prepared, like making certain that your car is in good repair and keeping the following emergency equipment in the trunk of your car: 1. A cellular phone (make sure to have important phone numbers programmed.) 2. Working jack & tire iron 3. Spare tire 4. Road flares & reflective triangles 5. Jumper cables 6. Empty gas can 7. Flashlight 8. 2 gallons of water (for overheating cars and humans) 9. Blanket (remember if your motor isn't running, neither is your heater.) 10.
