Description:
I used to know a Truck Person. My boss at the time-his name was Gilbert-was this little squat construction worker, and we would drive from job to job in his old white Chevy. Or at least I think it was a Chevy-back then, trucks were just trucks, not Silverados or Rams or F-whatevers. Like a poor kid with a middle name, putting a badge on a truck just didn't seem to fit.
No matter--Old Gilbert loved that truck. In fact, I think he fired me so he could afford an oil change.
Truck people. There two types: the Gilberts out there who don't really care what their truck looks like, or even how it drives. They drink Bud in a place that has a jukebox and they always-always-wear the same shirt to work. Just as long as that truck gets to the job site with a load of bricks and cement in the back.
Then there's the other kind of truck people. They like power, lots of it, and they like to be able to haul stuff, even if they have nothing whatsoever to put in the back of the truck. One day, they might have something…and because they're Truck People, chances are it will be big, like Pig Iron.
Grab a load and haul it. Yo. The one thing they like even more than haulin' power is comfort: comfy leather, heated seats and climate control. After a hard day at the office, it's nice to kick off the penny loafers in a refined environment.
Truck people. Think they're Kings of the Road. And maybe they are-after all, there are more trucks on the road than those, ahem, cars. Automakers take truck drivers seriously-to the point that General Motors, when redesigning its old C/K truck line, asked their truck drivers what it should look like. They were told to stay away from girlie swoops and soft lines, 'cuz it's not seemly on a truck. It would be like wearing pink to a hockey game.
Thus, the Silverado was born, looking mean and tough like a hinged box. Two years later the look hasn't changed much-but with improvements to the suspension and performance, today's Silverado is one of the best truck values on the market. When it comes to trucks, what counts most is performance, comfort and dependability-in case you really are going to use it as a work truck. And while driving around town in a 2500 HD will make you want to find a pile of Pig Iron, it will also give you a comfy and secure feeling. The cab is quiet, the seats are comfortable. The interior is roomy and reachable. Perhaps best of all, the Silverado has plenty of cubby holes and cabinets for storage including a top console for sunglasses, door openers and miscellaneous knick knacks. There's also a huge lockable compartment between passenger and driver.
Loads of space to store stuff is a good thing because turning this beast around can be a challenge. Other than manuverability, the Silverado-1500 and 2500 HD-is an easy and comfortable drive. The suspension is much improved, and body control stays pretty neat at high speeds. The 2500 HD is a bit heavy in the handling, but it is big truck-nimble is not the way these monsters drive. There's no driving around anything in the Silverado-but why waste time driving around when you can just go straight on through?
The Silverado is a power hog, what with four engines starting with a 200-horsepower 4.3-liter V-6 and ending with a hair raising 6.0-liter V-8--300 horses galloping under the hood for the 2500. Of course, gas mileage is a problem, but hey-if you're quibbling about gas, go buy one of those cute little pick up trucks and leave the real trucks for the Truck People.
New for 2001
The Silverado 1500 is available in four models: C1500 2WD and K1500 4WD, in regular cab and extended cab models. New for 2001, traction control is now available on 2WD models and a composite box is now included on the K1500 extended cab. New exterior colors include Medium Green Pearl Metallic and Sunset Orange Metallic, and all extended cab models now include four doors.
Standard Equipment
All models are standard equipped with 4-wheel anti lock disc brakes and daytime running lights with automatic exterior lamp control. LS and LT models are standard equipped with programmable automatic door locks and a self-dimming rearview mirror with outside temperature display. A high capacity air cleaner and power driver and passenger seats are available as options.
