Description: Since 1992 the Grand AM has been among the nation’s top-ten best-selling passenger cars and is Pontiac’s bestseller. The Grand AM was totally redesigned in 1999 and acquires nominal changes for 2001. With the elimination of the SE2 model the Grand AM is only available in SE, SE1, GT, and GT1 trims as either a 2-door coupe or a 4-door sedan. The Grand AM’s bold design features cat’s-eye headlamps, twin-port grille, round headlamps and the instantly recognizable ribbed lower body contours while the GT models sport their own distinctive front and rear fascias and rear deck spoiler. This year three new exterior colors have been added: Galaxy Silver Metallic, Champagne Beige Metallic and Dark Bronzemist Metallic. The new Wave/Form cloth interior trim and 15-inch aluminum wheels round out the improvements for 2001. All trims come with the upgraded Delco sound system with the SE possessing an AM/FM/cassette, the SE1 and GT receiving an AM/FM/CD player with a seven-band equalizer and digital clock, and the GT1 gets an AM/FM/CD/cassette with equalizer and clock. For maximum sound performance the GT and GT1 boasts an eight-speaker Monsoonâ premium audio system as standard. The Grand AM may appear to be just another sports car but it is also a well-built car with a long list of safety and security features to its credit. A steel cage with reinforced pillars, dual airbags, child safety locks (sedans), rear child-seat upper and new lower tether anchors, anti-lock brakes, traction control, daytime running lights, five-mph bumpers and PASSLockâ II theft deterrent are some of the Grand AM’s defensive features. Either a standard 2.4-liter 150 horsepower 4-cylinder engine or an optional 3.4-liter 170 horsepower V6 powers the SE and SE1 trims. For spirited driving performance the GT models receive a standard 3.4-liter V6 with a Ram Air induction system that produces 175 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft of torque. The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine is teamed with either a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic while the 3.4L V6 is only teamed with the 4-speed automatic transmission.
