Inside+Out: The 1999 Toyota
Camry

exterior features

The strange case of the
missing radio antenna &150; Your Camry has an audio system, and the radio works
just fine, but where in the world has the antenna gone? In new Camrys, the radio antenna
is imbedded in the rear window. Why, you ask? Well, an antenna makes more noise than most
folks realize, whistling and whooshing along in the wind. By placing the antenna in the
window, the noise vanishes along with the metal mast. Also, an antenna is just asking for
trouble when you roll through a car wash or drive under low-hanging branches. With the
antenna in the window, there is less chance of it ending up mangled or missing.
24-hour headlights
&150; Also known as daytime running lights (DRL). If you have a Camry XLE, LE, or CE with
ABS, your car has daytime running lights. Essentially, these are your low-beam headlights
operating at a reduced intensity during the day. The idea of course is to make your Camry
more visible to other drivers, and in Northern Europe where DRLs have been used for years,
they&146;ve proven to be very effective in reducing the number of collisions. As a
convenience, Toyota has also included an automatic On/Off feature for the full lighting
system. In other words, if you drive into a parking garage or tunnel, or if it&146;s
starting to get dark outside, a light sensor on the dash will switch on the full-intensity
low beams, tail lights and instrument-panel lights. This way, you won&146;t inadvertently
drive at night with your daytime running lights on &150; but your tail lights and dash
lights off. You may forget to turn the lights on, but the Camry won&146;t.
High Solar Energy Absorbing
glass &150; To keep your car from feeling like an agricultural hot house when
the sun hits it, the glass in your Camry is designed to absorb ultraviolet rays. Also, the
rays that get stopped by this otherwise normal-looking glass could fade the interior over
time if they went unchecked. Another benefit of solar energy absorbing glass is that it
can help keep the windows from fogging up when there is a lot of humidity outside, and
there are a lot of passengers inside. Finally, your air conditioner won&146;t have to
work up such a sweat, seeing that this glass keeps you and your car cooler on seriously
hot days.
Heated side-view mirrors
&150; Most people don&146;t even know that their Camry XLE has this handy little item.
When you turn on the rear window defroster, the side-view mirror glass automatically heats
up and defrosts as well. After all, it&146;s tough to safely change lanes if your
side-view mirrors are so iced over they look like vertical skating rinks. And, if you
forget to turn the defroster off, your Camry will automatically switch off the rear window
defroster and the heated mirrors after 15 minutes.
About that paint finish &150;
Put your new Camry side-by-side with other midsize sedans, and you&146;ll notice the
finish looks smoother and more expensive. Five years later, put your Camry side-by-side
with other sedans, and it should still look great. Here&146;s why. First, this is one of
the rare vehicles that&146;s wet sanded by hand at the factory. After your Camry is
painted and machine sanded to smooth and even-out the finish, the paint receives a second
treatment. A wet compound is applied by hand to bring out the best shine and surface
texture in the paint. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming procedure that most
manufacturers don&146;t bother with. The second interesting point is a special anti-chip
paint that is applied to the leading edge of the hood, the lower door panels and the
rocker panels beneath the doors. An additional lower door molding is also added to protect
the finish. Combined with the phosphate body treatment and wax sealers used to protect
against rust, this car should look good for a long, long time.
