Description: Overall Rating: Comfort Rating: Performance Rating: Quality Rating: Appearance Rating: Favorite Feature: The best driving and handling car in this group. Least Favorite Feature: Interior seems a bit spartan as compared to the Mercedes or Lexus. Even Volvo is nicer. Advice to Buyer: Be sure you look around. Competition is tough. You may not share my high standards. Detailed Review: I prefer a L-6 cylinder engine over V-6. They are getting scarce. Even Mercedes dropped their silky-smooth L-6 in favor a V-6. I wondered if the BMW would be underpowered and this would necessitate the 540i car, which was just too expensive. I was pleased that this car seemed to have more than adequate acceleration and power for me. The first thing I noticed about the BMW was the steering effort to maneuver the car in the lot was higher than other cars I tested. This bothered me at first, but as I drove the car it became apparent that the car had road feel and manners second to none of the other cars I drove. Although it did not ride quite as comfortably as the Mercedes or Lexus at times, it had excellent feel of the highway. Styling is certainly similar to the Volvo and the interior of the BMW is comfortable and color matched. Instrumentation is not as modern appearing as the Mercedes or Lexus. Seating adjustments were equivalent and brakes worked well. Trunk space was just a bit smaller than the Lexus but not as convenient as the Volvo with the folding rear seat. I was dissappointed with my previous ownership of BMW products. I felt it had perceived, but not actual quality. This car seems to reflect different philosophy by the company. Obviously, they have retained the road manners, while improving everything else. This car was the best driving and handling car I tested. It was not the most practical (Volvo). It was not the marque of comparison (Mercedes). It did not have the high-end luxurious interior of the Lexus. But as soon as I drove down the road, this car felt alive. Everything else was so close that driving became my standard of comparison. Nothing else seemed as nice.
