Description: Named for one very hot red pepper, the Porsche Cayenne looks to spice up a Sport Utility field that has been long on utility, and short on sport. After sampling the new sport ute on and off-road, I can safely say that never has a vehicle been so well equipped for a trip that it will never make. The trip I refer to is anywhere off-road. Cayenne has considerable off-road capabilities. They are all the more impressive in light of the Porsche's on road chops. It is the ultimate SUV challenge - making a vehicle so good in both realms that it will satisfy the hard core in either camp. And Cayenne arguably does both better than anyone - even if buyers never notice. The two crossover utes share many components, but differ in strategic spots. One path where they do not diverge is their appetite for off-roading. Porsche gets there riding a combination of advanced hardware, assisted by plenty of smart electronics. Cayenne uses a permanent four wheel drive system called Porsche Traction Management (PTM), which will channel as much as 100% of the available engine torque to front or rear wheels, as needed. In light off-roading situations, PTM requires no driver input. As things get uglier, the driver can call in reinforcements by simply pressing a dash button. Punching the switch activates the Porsche's reduced-ratio off-road gearing. Porsche Cayenne, continued |
