The crossover concept, brought to Detroit for its worldwide debut, has a 241-hp V-6 engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with a Tiptronic gearbox. With a projected top speed of 144, it is able to sprint to 60 mph in less than 6.9 seconds. The coupe, which is designed to marry off-road prowess and uncompromising sportscar capability, has gullwing doors and an open-sky feel T-roof, with a removable hardtop and integrated trunk lid. Tall ground clearance comes from its 19-inch wheels, while inside it gets high tech with a Personal Mobility Gateway (PMG) wireless communication interface, with a navigation system and MP3 player. Other news from VW included a release on the new "pocket-rocket" Golf R32, to go on sale in February, priced starting at $29,100, which will be the most-powerful Golf ever, with 240 hp. Also, the launch during the first quarter of the year of the new Touareg TDi, with a 5.0-liter V10, which will post numbers of 320 hp. and 553 lb. ft of torque, "with the strength and power of a buffalo", priced at $57, 800. And, the 2004 Passat TDi, a first for the U.S. market, with 134 hp. and 247 ft. lb. of torque, available with the new optional 4Motion AWD on high end models. 2004 Auto Show Gallery More Show Photos... d |
