Held in four stages in the US, South Africa and Australia, the multi-sport competition tested the driving and outdoor adventure skills of participants from around the globe for four weeks, and over more than 4,000 miles. Although the driving competition finished in April, those who could not participate can still get a piece of the action with Land Rover's limited edition 2004 G4 Freelander and 2004 G4 Discovery models. The new versions have special trim and extra features that emphasize rugged capabilities inspired by off-road and adventure travel. Based on the up-level SE version of British baby-ute, the G4 Freelander features the same 174 horsepower V6, five-speed automatic transmission and permanent four-wheel drive as its sibling. Available in Tangiers Orange or Java Black, the G4 edition will include full-length roof rails with an expedition roof rack, an A-frame brush bar, side rails and rear lamp guards. Other special trim additions include waterproof seat covers, 17-inch wheels and a sunroof. Land Rover G4 Challenge badging appears on the front fenders and rear tailgate, and is embroidered on seat covers. Only 200 of the special edition models will be available starting late fall, priced at $29,995, which includes destination and delivery. The G4 Discovery has the same powertrain as the regular Discovery, with a 4.6-liter, 217 horsepower V8, five-speed automatic, self-leveling suspension and dual sunroofs. Painted in Tangiers Orange, the roof rail is an all-new, large-diameter design dubbed the "Aero." An A-frame brush bar and rear lamp guards protect the exterior, while 'Black Mogul" technical fabric covers the inside. Adventure-worthy accessories include a Class III tow hitch, a selectable locking center differential, rear access ladder, driving lamp kit, and lockable roof rail cross bars, while the interior is made more civilized with an in-dash CD player, black leather-wrapped steering wheel and eight-way power driver and passenger seats. A G4 graphics kit brings G4 badging on the exterior and on the tire cover. Only 200 of the limited edition Discoverys will be available starting in the 4th quarter of 2003, at a price of $39,995, which includes destination and delivery. --Photos Courtesy of Land Rover --Story by Sue Mead Sue Mead works as a photojournalist and features writer for more than two dozen publications.
