Description: Elton Brand Earlier this year professional basketball forward Elton Brand appeared in his first All-Star game, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring six points -- a typical workmanlike performance for one of the toughest, most fundamentally sound players in the game. After establishing himself as the Duke Blue Devils' all-time field goal percentage leader (.621) in only two college seasons, Brand was selected as the top pick in the draft by the Chicago Bulls in 1999. Surprising many critics who thought he lacked the size and athleticism to dominate at the next level, he immediately established himself as one of the top power forwards in the league...and a legitimate force. During his first two seasons he shone as the one bright spot for a weakened franchise, becoming the first Chicago-area professional player to average 20 points and 10 rebounds for two consecutive years since Artis Gilmore achieved the feat in 1978-79. In what has to be one of the most lopsided trades in recent memory, Brand joined a local team this season, anchoring a talented but vastly inexperienced team with his tireless work ethic and relentless inside presence. Despite sustained losses to injury to several other starters, Brand has keyed the team's unaccustomed late-season playoff hunt, proving himself to be the missing piece to the once-woeful franchise's puzzle. |
