Days when Ford Motor Company executives basked in the sunny warmth of vehicles considered to be hallmarks for quality, style and innovation. Then one night a family flipped their Explorer on a Texas highway. Of course, the Firestone tire recall wasn't the only thing that went wrong for Ford. Defective tires on an SUV didn't cause other vehicle recalls---or the elimination of 35,000 positions world-wide. But that was then, this is now, and---according to CEO Bill Ford---now is a brand new day, with renewed commitment to quality products. That old friend sun is breaking through the clouds and shining down once again on the humbled Fords of Dearborn. "Our revitalization plan is centered on products," said Ford. "The company that builds and delivers the best cars and trucks wins, and we're going to win. I can't think of a better symbol of that winning attitude than GT40." The GT40 is indeed a fitting vehicle on which to start the long trip back, if only as a symbolic gesture. The famed race car represents a solid model line-up anchored as always by the incredibly successful F-Series truck line. There's just about something for everyone, from family-haulers and worker vans to hip youngster mobiles: New vehicles Thunderbird The Thunderbird is a triumph for Ford. Designers were able to take elements from the 55-57 two-seater and build a modern version of the T-Bird. Not a retro, but a new Thunderbird with a 2002 personality. Just don't count on buying one for MSRP. SVT Focus This is Ford's "Hot Hatch", to compete with the likes of Honda's Civic Si. Scheduled for release later this year, the Focus SVT is powered by a highly tuned 2.0L DOHC Zetec in-line four cylinder engine, producing 170hp and 145 ft.-lbs. of torque. The SVT will feature a unique trim line,17-inch wheels, anti-lock brakes, a premium AM/FM stereo CD, and an optional Audiophile Package. Redesigned Explorer By now, everyone in the car-driving world knows about the Explorer and its 2002 refinements. This mid-size SUV is slightly longer and wider and has an optional third row seat-the first mid-sized SUV to offer this feature. Ford has maintained the four Explorer trim lines: XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. The all-wheel drive option has been dropped, leaving just the 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive models. The rigid rear suspension of last year has been replaced with a new independent rear suspension on all models. Other equipment changes include standard 16-inch wheels and tires, an optional 240 horsepower V8 engine, and an optional side-impact airbag system designed to protect both the first and second row passengers. Changes Excursion In case the existing Excursion wasn't big or luxurious enough, Ford has added the XLT Premium and Limited Ultimate to the line-up. There's new interior conveniences such as power door locks, adjustable pedals, automatic climate control, and a power passenger seat. The optional Rear Seat Entertainment System includes a VHS player, a flip down monitor, wireless headphones, and remote controls. Additional options include heated seats, a reverse sensing system, and second row bucket seats for the Limited Ultimate model. F-150 Revisions for this year include standard air conditioning on all models and the new optional 7700 lbs. Payload Package B, which adds a 4.10 limited slip rear axle, LT245 all-season tires, and the Class III Trailer Tow Package. New exterior paints offered include Dark Shadow Grey, True Blue, and Estate Green (XLT models only). Focus The Focus Hatchback is available in three models: ZX3, ZX5, and SVT. The ZX3 and ZX5 have a 130-hp 2.0L engine and a five-speed manual transmission. The SVT has a 170-hp 2.0L engine and a six-speed manual transmission. All models have front and rear independent suspension with optional anti-lock brakes. The ZX3 Premium Package includes 16-inch wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, and an optional four-speed automatic transmission. The ZX3 Power Premium Package further adds traction control, a power moonroof, and power locks, windows, and mirrors. The SVT, scheduled for release later this year, will have a unique trim line,17-inch wheels, anti-lock brakes, a premium AM/FM stereo CD, and an optional Audiophile Package. Ranger Upgrades include a new MP3/CD player, color-keyed floor mats (XLT models), a limited slip rear axle, and increased fuel economy for the 3.0L engine. The 4.0L engine is no longer available on regular cab models. New optional packages include the XLT Appearance Package, the Power Equipment Group, and the Edge Plus Package. The Power Equipment Group features a keyless remote entry system and power door locks, windows, and mirrors. Additional options include a sliding rear window, cruise control, a side step bar, and a hard tonneau cover for the Edge 4WD model. Dark Highland Green is the only new exterior color for 2002.
