2002. It may eventually come to represent the best collection of cars to never make it out of the showroom. It's certainly not the cars, trucks and SUVs available with this model year. While we, as shoppers, try to get into a spending spirit, one of the most impressive new vehicle graduating classes goes shuffling by. From the Lexus SC430 to the Subaru Impreza WRX and Kia Sedona, scores of models are debuting and still more are redesigned (BMW 7 series) and improved. Below is a preview of new and redesigned 2002 models: Acura RSX
It's not easy to sit down a popular and long standing member of the line-up. Yet Acura has managed the trick, replacing the Integra with the RSX--a rookie that may be part of the team for quite awhile. The RSX is standard with a 2.0L 160-hp engine and a five-speed manual transmission. The RSX-S has a 2.0L 200-hp engine with a six-speed manual transmission. Both have anti-lock brakes and independent front and rear suspension. Standard features include automatic climate control, power windows and mirrors, and a key less entry remote system. Like the music loud? The RSX has a premium audio system with in-dash CD player. But if you like your tunes loud and clear, try the RSX-S: it boasts an Acura/Bose Music System with six-disc in-dash CD changer and cassette. The RSX is available with optional leather bucket seats and an automatic transmission that functions as a semi-manual or conventional automatic transmission.
Reviews | Specifications TL
Acura also adds the Type-S to the 3.2TL model line-up for 2002. The Type-S gets a 260-hp V-6 engine, sport-tuned suspension, Vehicle Stability Assist, 17-inch wheels, metallic-face gauges and more interior accents than you can shake a performance tire at, such as an in-dash 6 CD changer. The outside has been tweaked, with a new look tail and front. the Type-S gets sequential sport shifting as a standard feature, as do the other TLs. RL
Hang on! The 2002 3.5RL now delivers a meaty 225 horsepower and 200-plus lbs.-ft of torque, an improvement from last year's model. Acura also improved the RL's double wishbone suspension. And get this--all that power, and the 2002 RL is classified as a Low Emission Vehicle (LEV)--gotta love those Acura brainiacs. The new suspension (call it Sport, sport) is enhanced with low profile tires. Interior noise? Huh? new insulation throughout the engine compartment dampens exterior noise. Audi A4
Is the new A4 really all that new? Introduced almost a year ago, the improvements made to the A4--suspension, interior, engine, transmission---are certainly significant...but new? Now a convertible would be new, as would a wagon, and rumor has it that both may be available--or at least on the motor show circuit--by 2003. Regarding the A4...it's a redesigned monster you should buy, provided you like the look and have the change. Just don't tell that neighbor who bought the 2001, unless he mowed your pansies and you have cruel streak. Audi redesigned the compact A4, giving it a more interior space and a revised independent rear suspension. The engine is also new: A new aluminum 3.0-liter V-6 engine replaces that puny little 2.8-liter they put in the '01. The new one generates a healthy amount of hooves and dirt, to the tune of 220 horsepower. The new transmission (CVT) is available only with front-wheel drive models. With an electronic stability system that enhances emergency braking power, Audi claims a significant increase in body rigidity. Side-impact airbags for the rear seats are available.
Reviews | Specifications BMW 7 Series
Let's face it. If you're buying this country club-on-wheels, you're probably not reading this. So skip down to the Crown Vic, and keep dreaming. The first 7 for 2002, the 745i, has a V-8. The V-12 will arrive later, and it's surely worth the wait. All will come with the world's first (so BMW says) six-speed automatic transmission. Our secret Rhine operative has told us that the 745i is an automotive wonder, with things like adaptable valve timing, aluminum suspension, and so many air bags that you'd be hard-pressed to break a nail. Of course, if you crash the new 745i, you should be forced to drive one of those old 318s for a year. Maybe that's easier said than done. The ol' BMW look-at-the-back-of-my-car temptation comes standard in the 745i--the thing is fast, incredibly safe and strong. Make that powerful. Really powerful, to the tune of 6.3 in the mile and tons of torque. Driver controls will be mostly on the steering wheel and a console between front seats. Sorry to say, but BMW doesn't really need to release this 2002 in 2001--as some, ah, other automakers are so fond of doing. Buy yours--or dream about it--in January, 2002.
Preview | Specifications --> Buick Rendezvous
The new 2002 Rendezvous is available in two trim levels, CX and CXL, in either front-wheel drive or Versatrak all-wheel-drive (AWD). Power is provided by a 3.4 liter V-6 engine boasting 185 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 210lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The Rendezvous is one of the first models to showcase GM's all new enhanced heads-up display (HUD) system as an available option. Seven-passenger seating is available with the optional third row fold and stow seat. This third row seat also reclines and removable. The OnStar Communications system is available, as well as an optional Rear Parking Aid system. For safety, side air bags and four wheel disc four-channel anti-lock brakes are standard.
Reviews | Specifications Cadillac CTS
A 2003 model scheduled to go on sale in January 2002, the Cadillac CTS will replace the current Catera and, Cadillac hopes, will be the first American entry-level luxury sedan to be serious competition to imports such as the Lexus ES 300 and the BMW 3 Series. Distinctive in its styling with vertical head and tail lamps and a new interpretation of the classic Cadillac eggcrate grille, the CTS represents the first ground-up design since Cadillac's new strategy for the fusion of "Art and Science." With a re-engineered version of the 3.0-liter V6 in the current Catera, the 220 horsepower 3.2-liter V6 with a five-speed Getrag manual transmission CTS is projected to travel 0-60 mph in under seven seconds. The interior mixes leather and wood with hi-tech gadgetry, such as a "mouse button" on the steering wheel to control the infotainment system and four steering wheel mounted buttons that can be programmed to do anything the driver desires, such as changing the radio station to turning off the traction control.
Read a Preview of the CTS | Escalade
Cadillac has completely redesigned the Escalade for 2002. And what a job they've done--the Escalade is easily the best-looking SUV in the GM stable. Buy it in black and pass out neck braces to passersby. Available with either 2-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, both models have received new engines. The 2-wheel drive is powered by a 5.3-liter 285 horsepower V-8, while the all-wheel drive has a 6.0-liter 345 horsepower V-8. Both are equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Escalade's exterior styling has been resculpted to give the vehicle sharper lines and a more chiseled overall look. The standard features list includes amenities such as heated leather seats, electronic climate control, and a premium audio system with 6-disc CD changer. In addition, the all-wheel drive models feature Stabiltrak, Cadillac's electronic stability enhancement system.
Reviews | Specifications Chevrolet Avalanche
Change for a dollah? Sure--and that's just what Chevrolet's trying to do--change. And with the 2002 Avalanche, Chevrolet has introduced an entirely new style of vehicle to the truck line. Built on the Silverado chassis and powered by either a 5.3L or 8.1L V-8 engine, the Avalanche is a four-door vehicle capable of seating six in its SUV-like interior, while still providing a 5ft. truck bed. Or, by folding down the Midgate and rear seating, one person can reconfigure the cargo area in seconds to provide either an open, or fully enclosed and lockable 4ft. x 8ft. cargo box. The Avalanche is available as either a 1/2-ton or a 3/4-ton and with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Optional upgrades include a power sunroof, leather seating, a driver information center, and the OnStar system. If you can get over the unorthodox look, this is perhaps the most versatile vehicle on the planet.
Reviews | Specifications TrailBlazer
What's a Bravada that looks like an Envoy...but drives better than any other mid-sized Chevy SUV? Why, it's GM's newest SUV vehicle, stretched across three platforms. This would normally be a bit of a gyp--but not with these three. All are different in styling and driving; and the TrailBlazer may well be the best of the bunch. For the 2002 model year, Chevrolet introduces the TrailBlazer to its model line-up. Three trims are available: LS, LT, and LTZ. All are available in 2WD or 4WD. All TrailBlazer models feature an all-new Vortec in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 270 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. It is coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Other standard items include power windows and locks, air conditioning, a PASSLock theft-deterrent system and an AM/FM radio with CD. The higher level LTZ trim is equipped with a premium sound system, premium leather seating surfaces, a content theft deterrent system, sport aluminum wheels and a driver convenience package. The Onstar Vehicle Communications system is standard on the LT and LTZ trims. Go for the leather and the LTZ.
Reviews | Specifications Dodge Ram
Another one of the 2002s that debuted in February 2001, the Dodge Ram may well be in the least need of a refresher. Though the truck was overhauled in 1994, the look--mean like a Jackal--still works for most Truck People. The changes to 2002 will do nothing to change that perception. The famous grouchy-tooth grill is bigger than ever, and there's even an added muscle bulge or two. Cabs are larger, and each trim level looks differently from the front. A neat adjustable pedal feature and a neater "curtain" style of air bag are optional.
Preview | Specifications Ford Thunderbird
Call the Thunderbird a 2001 1/2--especially after the initial media blitz. To be sure, this is possibly the oldest 2002 around. So now that everyone knows how Ford brought back the Thunderbird for 2002 as a newly designed two-seat convertible, the question isn't whether it's cool and well-made. Will it fly off the lots for $40,000? Umm, nevermind. Let's discuss the cool and well made thing. While the new Thunderbird takes many of its exterior styling cues from the Thunderbirds of the 1950's, there is no shortage of modern conveniences and technology. Power is provided by a 3.2L 252 horsepower V-8 coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, dual second-generation air bags, four-wheel ABS disc brakes, and four-wheel independent suspension. Customers may choose either deluxe or upgraded premium trim, and a removable hardtop is also available. Interior accent packages are available in black or one of three matching exterior colors: Torch Red, Thunderbird Blue, or Inspiration Yellow.
Reviews | Specifications Focus SVT
The Focus Hatchback is available in three models: ZX3, ZX5, and SVT. The ZX3 and ZX5 have a 130-hp 2.0L engine and a five-speed manual transmission. The SVT has a 170-hp 2.0L engine and a six-speed manual transmission. All models have front and rear independent suspension with optional anti-lock brakes. The ZX3 Premium Package includes 16-inch wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, and an optional four-speed automatic transmission. The ZX3 Power Premium Package further adds traction control, a power moonroof, and power locks, windows, and mirrors. The SVT, scheduled for release later this year, will have a unique trim line,17-inch wheels, anti-lock brakes, a premium AM/FM stereo CD, and an optional Audiophile Package.
Preview | Specifications | 2001 vs. 2002 Expedition
For 2002, the Expedition has returned with minor changes, including new feature packaging and the deletion of some exterior color choices. Based on the F-150 chassis, the Expedition is powered by either a 4.6L or a 5.4L V-8 engine coupled with a four-speed automatic transmission. Two trims are available, XLT and Eddie Bauer. Both trims are available with either 2WD or 4WD. All Expeditions are equipped with tinted rear glass, power windows and locks, adjustable pedals, remote keyless entry, and power driver's seat. The Eddie Bauer models add chrome wheels, illuminated running boards, a six-disc CD changer, and leather seating with first-row captain's chairs. This year, the rear seat entertainment system is available on all models.
Reviews | Specifications Explorer
The Explorer has been refined and restyled for 2002. This mid-size SUV is now slightly longer and wider and now has an optional third row seat, bringing seating capacity to seven. Ford has maintained the four Explorer trim lines: XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. However, the all-wheel drive option has been dropped, leaving just the 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive models. The rigid rear suspension of last year has been replaced with a new independent rear suspension on all models. Other equipment changes include standard 16-inch wheels and tires, an optional 240 horsepower V8 engine, and an optional side-impact airbag system designed to protect both the first and second row passengers. New exterior color combinations are also available. The 2002 Explorer Sport Trac is available in two models: 2WD and 4WD. This four-door utility vehicle seats five and is equipped with a 4ft. truck bed. The Choice and Premium equipment arrays enhance the Sport Trac's feature list. The base model is equipped with a 210 horsepower V6 engine, while the Choice and Premium Groups feature a 214 horsepower 4.0L SOHC V6 coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. Leather seating and a power moonroof are also available with Premium Group. Some of the Sport Trac's key features include air conditioning, dual second-generation airbags, power door locks, and power windows. The 4WD models are equipped with a two-speed electric shift-on-the-fly transfer case and automatic locking front hubs.
Reviews | Specifications GMC Envoy
The Envoy is the best looking brother of GM's new SUV family tree. Sure, the Bravada and TrailBlazer are very nice, thank you. But if you like all three--the Envoy may turn your head with a few more refined curves. But that's not all. The all new Envoy is longer, taller, and wider than the GMC Jimmy it is replacing, which amounts to a smoother ride and more interior space. The new Vortec 4200 engine provides the Envoy with an ample 270 hp and 275 ft. lbs. of torque. In addition to a new, more angular bodystyle, and a redesigned rear suspension, the interior of the Envoy has been completely redone with new instruments and controls. Standard equipment includes GM's OnStar system, side-impact airbags, four wheel disc anti-lock brakes, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Optional upgrades include a Bose sound system, running boards, and power sunroof.
Reviews | Specifications | 2001 v. 2002 Honda CR-V
Way back in 1997, Honda launched something called the compact SUV market with the CR-V. As there are a few competitors in the space four years later, Honda has re-done the CR-V. More interior room (by almost 4 inches in front, more cargo space, rear space and headroom), sharper exterior curves and a new engine (160-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder i-VTEC) should re-energize a vehicle some think is a bit lost in the shuffling crowd. New rear seats have been installed. All disc brakes are new, and side-impact airbags are standard on the EX and optional on the LX. The 2002 CR-V hits markets late in 2001.
Reviews | Specifications Hyundai Elantra
The Elantra is available in two models: GLS Sedan and GT Hatchback. Both models have a 140-hp 2.0L engine with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic transmission. Safety features include both front and side impact air bags and a passenger air bag deactivation sensor. Air conditioning, and power windows, mirrors, and door locks are also standard equipment. The GT Hatchback adds sport-tuned suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, fog lamps, and 15-inch alloy wheels. A Convenience Package, consisting of a cruise control and a keyless entry system, is optional on the GLS and standard on the GT. Optional equipment on both models includes a power moonroof and an anti-lock braking system with traction control.
Reviews | Specifications Infiniti Q45
Talk about your face lifts. The third-generation Infiniti Q45 returns for the 2002 model year with a completely redesigned interior and exterior. The Q45 features a new 4.5-liter V8 engine that produces 340 horsepower and 333 ft-lbs. of torque. The exterior features 17-inch alloy wheels and multi-lens high intensity discharge (HID) xenon headlights. For the interior, the radio, navigation system, and temperature controls have been integrated into a single LCD touch screen. The Q45 also features Infiniti Voice Recognition, Vehicle Dynamic Control, a Bose audio system and a tire pressure monitor as standard. Optional items include heated front seats, a Premium Package, a Sport Package, Navigation Package, and painted splash guards.
Reviews | Specifications Isuzu Axiom
Sure, Axiom sales figures have made Joe I. cry. Maybe the public just wasn't ready for this quirky-looking mid-sized SUV. If that's the case, John Q. should look again: Available in 2WD and 4WD configurations, base models receive a long list of standard appointments, including automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, anti-lock brakes, and an 8-speaker 140-watt stereo with a 6-disc CD changer. The higher XS trim line includes leather interior, heated seats, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and a power moonroof. A 230 horsepower V6 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission is standard for all models. The Intelligent Suspension Control feature offers two driving modes, sport or comfort, depending on road conditions. All Isuzu models include a 10-year/120,000 mile limited powertrain warranty.
Reviews | Specifications Jaguar X-Type
What, a Jag for $30 Grand? Sure. Maybe you can get an X-Type off the lot for $30,000--maybe if it has folding chairs up front and Red Flyer wheels on the ground. That said, the little Jag is still a great buy. The Jaguar X-Type arrives as an all new model for the 2002 model year. The X-Type is a near-luxury sport sedan with a standard Jaguar Traction-4 All Wheel Drive system. Power is provided by a standard 2.5L V6 engine with 194 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission. A five-speed automatic is optional. Additional motivation is available with the optional 3.0L V6 engine with 231 horsepower. This engine features a standard automatic transmission with a five-speed manual as a no-charge option. Standard equipment includes Connolly leather trimmed seats, automatic climate control, and four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes. Options include a Navigation system, Sport Package, and Power Convenience Package.
Reviews | Specifications XJ Series
The 2002 XJ Series introduces the new XJ Sport and the formerly special order Vande Plas Supercharged model returns this year as a regular production model called the Super V8. The new XJ Sport combines the standard 4.0-liter V8 engine powertrain with sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, Pirelli P-Zero tires, sport seats and special trim. The long-wheelbase XJ8 has been discontinued, while the Vanden Plas and Super V8 retain the long-wheelbase body. For 2002, the XJR adds as standard equipment the formerly optional DVD navigation system and the sport-tuned suspension. The Navigation System is available on the Vanden Plas model. XJ8 and XJ Sport options include heated front and rear seats and an Alpine 320-Watt premium sound system.
Reviews | Specifications Jeep Liberty
For 2002, Jeep is retiring the 15-year-old Cherokee platform and replacing it with the all new Jeep Liberty. The Liberty has a completely new exterior that combines softer lines with traditional Jeep styling cues, such as single round headlights and a vertical slat grille, reminiscent of the Jeep CJ's. The Liberty is available in two trim levels: Sport and Limited, and is available in either 2WD or 4WD. A 2.4L four-cylinder is the base engine, with a 3.7L V-6 optional on the Sport models and standard on the Limited. Four-wheel drive models come standard with Jeep's Command Trac part-time four-wheel drive. Optional features include a Trailer Tow Group, power sunroof, a Security Group, and premium Infinity speakers.
Reviews | Specifications | 2001 v. 2002 Kia Rio Cinco
For 2002, Kia has expanded the the Rio line-up with the introduction of the Rio Cinco, an all-new four-door wagon. Based on the same chassis as the Rio sedan, the Cinco wagon also receives the same standard powertrain: a 1.5L 96-hp engine coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is available on both models at extra cost. Additional stand-alone options on the Rio include air conditioning, power door locks, alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, and an AM/FM CD stereo. The optional Upgrade Package equips the Rio with power steering, tilt steering wheel, a tachometer, and visor vanity mirrors. This package is standard on the Rio Cinco Wagon.
Reviews | Specifications Sedona
For 2002, Kia introduces the all new Sedona Minivan to its line-up. The Sedona is available in LX and EX trim lines, and the powertrain features a 3.5L V-6 engine coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. The Sedona is capable of seating up to seven passengers and is equipped with standard luxury amenities such as air conditioning, cruise control, and power windows and door locks. Standard features for the EX model include an eight-way power driver's seat, a luggage rack, and a keyless entry system. The EX model also offers upgrades such as a Leather Package, a power moonroof, and two-tone paint. Additional options include a Homelink Universal Transmitter (EX only), a rear spoiler, and four-wheel ABS brakes.
Reviews | Specifications Spectra
The Kia Spectra is available in two models: GS and GSX. For 2001, the GSX model receives minors revisions such as a gas cap tether and dual visor vanity mirrors. The improved braking features thicker and larger front discs, as well as larger calipers and brake pads. The Cruise Package (GSX only) is equipped with cruise control, door mounted tweeters, and dual power mirrors. The new Long Haul Warranty Program extends the warranty to a ten-year/100,000 mile limited powertrain, a five-year/60,0000 mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000 mile limited anti-perforation warranty. Optional features include an automatic transmission, variable intermittent wipers, a keyless remote entry system, and an anti-lock braking system.
Reviews | Specifications Lexus IS 300 SportCross Wagon
For the 2002 model year, Lexus has expanded the IS 300 line-up with the introduction of the IS 300 SportCross Wagon. As with the IS 300 Sedan, the five-passenger SportCross features a 3.0L inline-six that produces 215-hp and 218 lb-ft of torque. Also new this year, the IS 300 will receive a standard 5-speed manual transmission. The SportCross, however, will only be available with a 5-speed automatic (an extra cost option on the IS 300 Sedan). All models feature traction control, anti-lock disc brakes, and dual front and side-impact airbags. Available options include vehicle skid control, a limited-slip differential, power sunroof, navigation system, and two separate leather upholstery packages.
Reviews | Specifications SC 430
The SC 430 is the kind of car people stare at, for long seconds, through eyes filled with the caress of envy. With almost zero practicality, this is a statement car (look at me!) all the way, and there's nothing wrong with that. Most people would love to make this kind of a statement. A standard power retractable hardtop transforms the SC 430 from a 2+2 coupe to a convertible in less than 25 seconds. Sports car performance is provided by a 300-horsepower 4.3-liter V8 engine mated to an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission. Standard 18-inch aluminum wheels feature a tire pressure warning system, and Run Flat tires are optional. A DVD-based Navigation System is also optional, and features a 256-color wide-screen display that can tilt up or down by seven degrees to minimize glare. Concert quality sound is provided by a standard Mark Levinson stereo system with nine speakers and an in-dash CD changer.
Reviews | Specifications LS 430
Lexus has been busy. Not content with the SC 430, the automaker kept its designers hopping with a re-do of the mid-sized LS 430. They say it's 'all new,' and with a new platform and a sharper character, they may be right. Lexus has also tossed some nifty technological tricks into the mix, such as high-intensity headlamps and a 'smart' five-speed automatic transmission. Safety-wise, Lexus has added new curtain airbags in order to complement the side impact airbags. Like the SC 430, the LS can be equipped with a DVD-based navigation system--and in case you're really lost, a Mark Levinson stereo setup.

Reviews | Specifications Mazda Protege5
There's cool. And then there's the Mazda Protege5, so oriented to the youth market that designers almost installed a 30-something ejector button. Reviews | Specifications Mitsubishi Lancer
For many teenagers, the Lancer is somewhere between the WRX and the Cavalier. It's a nice little entry-level car with street smarts, the kind of car with which little Joey won't be able to find much trouble. As far as rally cars go, the Lancer is not quite the WRX. So let's not talk of rally cars, instead focusing on what the Lancer does best--it's a sharp looker that gets around without waking up the neighbors. The Lancer is available in three trim levels: ES, LS, and the OZ-Rally edition. The powertrain features a 2.0L engine coupled with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. All models are equipped with air conditioning, a CD player, and power windows, door locks, and mirrors. The OZ-Rally edition features ground effects, racing alloy wheels, and a sport-touch steering wheel. For increased safety, the Lancer features an illuminated internal trunk release on all models, and optional ABS brakes and side impact air bags on the LS model. Several dealer-installed accessories are also available such as a six-disc CD changer, roof rack, and side window air deflector.

Reviews | Specifications Pontiac 2003 Vibe
Sure, the term 'Styled by Pontiac' sounds a bit funny when you think of the Aztek. But that's the Vibe--styled by Pontiac, engineered by Toyota and produced at the Toyota/GM joint-venture facility in California. And where the Aztek was controversial and edgy, the Vibe is smoother, and thus more easily digested by a mass audience. That's not to say the Vibe is like every other small-sized cross over vehicle--the swooping roof line, alternative styling and distinct Pontiac features give it a signature look. Functionality is where the Vibe will make a name for itself. It may not be as versatile as the Aztek--clearly the most versatile crossover out there--but the Vibe offers plenty of fold-down cargo space and seating for five. Heck, there's also chrome tie-downs for bikes, or that XXX large pizza you're bringing home. Styling and convenience aside, perhaps the Viabe's most significant element is something that sits quietly inside the front seats: side airbags are standard for this small SUV. Not that you'd really need the airbags. At 130 horsepower and 4 cylinders, the Toyota engine is a few ponies short. If you like the car but want more muscle, try the Vibe GT and its 180 horsepower engine.
Preview | Specifications --> Saturn 2003 VUE
Front-drive and all-wheel-drive VUEs will be built to rival such small SUVs as the Honda CR-V, Mazda Tribute and Toyota RAV4. Space-frame construction mates with dent-resistant polymer bodyside panels, similar to those used on Saturn sedans, coupes and wagons. Car-height bumpers are ready to resist 5-mph impacts, and a low step-in height should ease entry and exit. The VUE measures 181.8 inches long overall, rides a 106-inch wheelbase and stands 66.3 inches high. The spare tire fits inside, beneath the load floor. The VUE has a fully independent suspension and 16-inch tires. Rear occupants have a 70/30-split, folding bench seat with a two-position recliner, and the front passenger seatback folds flat. The rear cargo area features tie-down points, hooks and a cargo organizer. GM's OnStar communication system will be optional. Two engines will be available: a 138-horsepower, 2.2-liter four-cylinder and a 181-hp, 3.0-liter V-6. A five-speed-manual transmission is standard with the four-cylinder, but the optional unit is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which has no conventional gearing but operates with two variable-diameter pulleys. In addition to a smooth power delivery, the CVT is supposed to produce a 2-mpg fuel-economy improvement. A regular five-speed automatic comes with the V-6. --> Subaru Impreza
All car shoppers should start at the WRX, initials that should actually stand for Whoa, Racer X. Even if you want a wagon, an SUV or a minivan. And don't just look at it--get in and drive the thing. You'll agree that Subaru's rally-extraordinaire is a nifty little rocket. Fact is, the entire Impreza line is redesigned for the 2002 model year. The WRX Sedan and Sport Wagon are new high performance models boasting a 227 horsepower turbocharged engine. The WRX features include a Momo brand leather-wrapped steering wheel, larger brakes with twin piston calipers, and an aluminum-alloy hood. Full time all wheel drive is standard, and all models now feature four-wheel anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights. WRX models also include front seat side impact airbags. A wide array of options are available including interior and exterior trim enhancements, various roof rack attachments for the wagon models, and off-highway competition suspension kits and a Sti performance muffler for the WRX models.

New for the GLX trim is the standard passenger-side vanity mirror. Reviews | Specifications | 2001 v. 2002 2003 Matrix
REWRITE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Toyota will not launch its youth-focused Matrix until early 2002, for the 2003 model year, but visitors to Detroit's North American International Auto Show in January 2001 got an advance look. Similar to Pontiac's forthcoming Vibe, the 2003 Matrix is said to combine the functionality of an SUV with the image and performance of a sports car, and to be as affordable as a subcompact sedan. Three trim levels will be offered with either front-drive or four-wheel drive. The five-passenger Matrix will be built in Canada and most resembles a small wagon. The Matrix will be built on a new platform similar to the one used by the popular Corolla sedan. A new cargo-floor sliding track system can be adapted to hold a variety of lifestyle accessories. The standard engine is a 130-horsepower four-cylinder with variable valve technology (VVT-i). Either a five-speed manual or an automatic transmission will be available. The Matrix Sport model will carry the same 180-hp four-cylinder engine and six-speed-manual transmission used in the Toyota Celica GT-S, along with a sport-tuned suspension and 17-inch tires. --> Volkswagen Jetta
The Jetta returns this new model year with several detail refinements. The optional 1.8T turbo engine has been upgraded from 150 horsepower to 180 horsepower. A new five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission is available with the 1.8T, while a five-speed manual is standard. A new premium stereo system with cassette and in-dash CD player, scheduled for a mid-year release, will be standard on all GLS and GLX models. The VR6 engine, standard on the GLX and optional on the GLS, will also be upgraded later this year. The new VR6, with the aid of a new four-valve arrangement, will boast 201 horsepower. Standard with the new VR6 will be a six-speed manual transmission, while a five-speed Tiptronic automatic will be optional.
Reviews | Specifications Passat
Volkswagen's popular Passat sedans and wagons have received a new look for 2002. Most of the exterior panels have been freshened, including a more steeply inclined grille with integrated fog lamps and a longer tail with redesigned taillights. Changes to the Passat's interior have been kept to a minimum, such as the addition of chrome-trimmed intruments. The 170 horsepower, 1.8T engine is standard with the GLS trim, while the GLX models receive the 193 horsepower V-6. In addition, the V-6 Passats are available with Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system when ordered with an automatic transmission. Other amenities standard on the GLX include 16-inch alloy wheels, wood grain trim, and heated leather seats.
