Description: The newly introduced 1998 Lincoln Navigator plots a fresh course by merging the comfort and luxury of a premium sedan with the go-anywhere ability of an advanced fullsize sport utility vehicle (SW). Navigator was designed and engineered to satisfy customers who have expressed a desire for luxury and comfort, safety, space for up to eight passengers or a week's worth of adventure gear, power, performance, towing capability and a quiet ride. Sport utility vehicles are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. automotive market. By the end of this year, SW sales likely will account for 2.3 million vehicles or 16 percent of the total market. Within this segment, the strongest expansion is in the full-size category, expected to grow to a half-million units by the end of 1998. In just 23 months--from design approval to Job One--Navigator was engineered to be the first full-size SW capable of combining deep-seated luxury and uncompromised function. Navigator efficiently fits in a standard-size garage. Instead of reinventing the wheel, the Navigator engineering team began with the successful Ford Expedition platform introduced for sale for the 1997 model year. Key attributes included box-section frame rails running from the front of the vehicle to about the rear-axle centerline, a coilspring short- and long-arm (SLA) front suspension, speed-sensitive power steering, a state-of-the-art SOHC V-8 powertrain, and best-in-class towing capacity of up to 8,000 pounds. Standard Navigator equipment includes a 5.4-liter SOHC V-8, 2x2 rear load-leveling suspension, four-wheel disc brakes with four-wheel antilock-braking system, special shock-absorber tuning, tires unique to Navigator, a distinctive Lincoln exterior appearance, and a luxurious interior. Navigator's 5.4-liter SOHC V-8 engine is an outgrowth of the original modular V-8 that made its debut in the 1991 Lincoln Town Car. Core features are a deep-skirt cylinder block with cross-bolted main-bearing caps, long cylinder-head retention bolts threaded into the most robust area of the block, a forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened journal surfaces, cast-aluminum cylinder heads, a chain-driven single-overhead cam valvetrain with roller-type cam followers and hydraulic lash adjusters, powdered-metal connecting rods with a cracked cap-to-rod interface engineered for optimum alignment, all-aluminum connecting rod and main bearing inserts for maximum durability, and rubber-isolated cam covers to minimize radiated engine noise. An innovative dual-volume intake manifold plenum is equipped with a computer-controlled valve to provide two small induction chambers at low engine speeds and one large chamber at high speed. The lower portion of the intake manifold is plastic for thermal isolation. Long intake runners are tuned to boost low-rpm output. The Navigator's V-8 is engineered for low maintenance and high reliability. Its fail-safe cooling system permits the vehicle to continue running at reduced speed for a short distance after total cooling loss with no permanent engine damage. When the engine control computer detects a precipitous rise in coolant temperature, it commands cylinders to fire alternately only half produce power while the other half pump cooling air through the engine. A six-quart oil pan provides extra lubrication reserve, longer life for internal components, and a hedge against high engine operating temperatures. Under normal driving conditions with regular oil and filter changes at 5,000-mile intervals, Navigator needs no additional tune-up service for the first 100,000 miles. Navigator's 5.4-liter SOHC V-8 balances smooth and quiet operation with excellent fuel efficiency and enough power and torque to handle tough assignments. With 230 horsepower at 4,250 rpm and 325 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm, Navigator delivers enthusiastic throttle response and spirited performance to demanding drivers. Electronically Controlled Powertain The same fifth-generation electronic engine control computer (EEC-V) that regulates engine operating variables also governs the automatic transmission. The 4R100 transmission teamed with the 5.4-liter V-8 has a lock-up torque converter, four forward speeds, an overdrive top gear for maximum highway fuel efficiency, and a handy overdrive lock-out button on its shift lever. Evev Keel at All Times The Navigator standard load-leveling suspension senses weight distribution and automatically makes the necessary adjustments. The control module collects height sensor output and air is added to or subtracted from rear springs as needed to maintain proper height in back. An estimated 75 percent of Navigator customers are expected to select the Control Trac four-wheel drive system. (Many SW owners in the south and southwestern areas of the United States prefer a 4x2 driveline configuration, so the 4x4 alternative is offered as optional equipment.) With 4x4, Navigator's load-leveling is a four-comer system. In addition to the rear air springs, front shock absorbers are fitted with air bladders to permit leveling at each comer, separately as needed. A "kneel-down" feature automatically lowers ride height 1 inch for easier exit and entry when the ignition key is fumed off. At speeds below 25 mph with the four-wheel drive system in low range, the load-leveling air suspension automatically elevates ride height 1 inch above the normal ride height to improve ground clearance for adverse driving conditions. Front and rear gas-pressure shock absorbers and anti-sway bars are tuned for a smooth ride and supple control to handle the broadest range of road surfaces and driving conditions. Control Trac The Navigator's 4x4 driveline is one of the most advanced systems on the U.S. market and capable of providing four-wheel-drive traction at the twist of a dash-mounted control knob. Four modes are available. The 2H setting is used for normal on-road driving with no unusual traction demands; torque is delivered only to the rear axle. In the A4WD mode, Control Trac automatically selects between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive as needed. The transfer case monitors driveshaft speed and reports the onset of slippage at the rear. When that occurs, a computer-controlled electromagnetic clutch engages to add torque to the front wheels. If the rear wheels regain grip, the clutch automatically disengages. When high-slippage conditions persist below 35 mph, Control Trac keeps front drive engaged for five minutes or until vehicle speed exceeds 45 mph. This mode can be engaged at any time with the vehicle in motion. Control Trac's 4H mode is preferred for snow, ice, shallow mud or sand at normal driving speeds. Drive to the front wheels is kept in permanent engagement. Like A4WD, this mode can be engaged on the fly. A 4L setting is provided for the most adverse conditions. To engage this low range, the vehicle must be stopped, the shift lever must be placed in neutral, and the brake pedal must be depressed. Engine torque is multiplied by a factor of 2.64, which is ideal for climbing or descending steep grades or in deep snow, mud or sand. To shift out of 4L, the procedure is the same as the one used to engage this mode. Many SUV buyers are new to four-wheel drive systems, so the Navigator driveline is simplified to do the best job with minimal demands on the driver. The A4WD setting is particularly helpful to those who have a genuine need for maximum traction but don't necessarily want to become an expert on the fine points of transfer cases and differentials. Wheels and Tires P245/75R-16 all-season tires mounted to cast-aluminum wheels provide a balance between ride, quiet running and all-around traction. Special effort went into tuning these tires to help reduce tread noise generated by textured pavement. Navigator models equipped with Control Trac may be fitted with 17-inch cast aluminum wheels or 17-inch chrome cast-aluminum wheels and larger all-terrain tires with an outlined-white-letter sidewall design. In addition to the traction benefits with these P255/75-17 tires, their larger section and diameter also provide a smooth, plush ride quality. Instantly Recognizable as a Lincoln A chrome turbine-vaned grille topped with the Lincoln star gives Navigator an unmistakable Lincoln signature. This prominent grille is mounted directly to a steel hood. Flanking the grille are clear-lens, complex-reflector halogen headlamps, which lend a jewel-like appearance in front. Large fog lamps below also use a clear-lens complex-reflector design. The front bumper fascia and fenders are smoothly sculpted to coordinate not only with the front-end design but also the bodyside moldings, wheel-arch flares, and illuminated integrated running boards in the side view. The 4x4 models also have front tow hooks integrated into the lower front bumper design. The Navigator liftgate is a one-piece design supported by dual gas struts for easy opening. A central toggle handle used to open either the tailgate or the smaller liftglass is mounted within the bright center applique panel. An inside pull-down handle permits closing the liftgate without stretching. Navigator's flip-up rear glass panel is ideal for loading small items. The full-size spare tire is stowed beneath the rear of the vehicle so it doesn't take up cargo space or necessitate unloading luggage in the event of a flat. Complex-reflector designs for both the tail and back-up lamps are repeated for a jewel-like appearance. The center applique houses the license plate and back-up lamps, while the rear glass surround is topped with a light-emitting-diode type center brake lamp. The rear bumper fascia integrates a Class III trailer-tow hitch and a seven-wire harness. Also included are a heavy-duty flasher, super engine cooling and an auxiliary transmission cooler. A roof-mounted luggage rack with 200-pound capacity is standard Navigator equipment. An Upscale Interior A special Sound Isolation Package helps block the intrusion of powertrain, wind and tire noise. The Navigator interior has 18-ounce carpeting, a soft-touch instrument panel fitted with genuine burled walnut inserts and leather upholstery. Navigator's instrumentation cluster contains easy-to-read analog gauges, including speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip odometer, coolant temperature reading, oil pressure, charging and fuel level. Instruments and controls are backlit. The center stack supports the audio system, the Electronic Automatic Temperature Control panel, a digital clock and Control Trac switch for 4x4 models. The glove box release is within easy reach of the driver. Two slide-out cup holders and a driver's-side storage bin and power point are built into the dash. The front consoles are positioned both on the floor and overhead to place other convenience features within easy reach. The lower unit has open and closed storage areas, two large cup holders, and map pockets. The optional six-disc CD changer is housed inside this unit. The rear edge of the center console supports fan controls and vent registers that direct cool or warm air to rear-seat passengers, radio controls, two headphone jacks, dual cup holders and a 12-volt power receptacle. Overhead are map lamps, switches for the power rear-quarter window, a receptacle for sunglasses, and open storage. A smaller electronic display reports average and instantaneous fuel economy, distance to empty and compass heading. Bucket seats are provided for both front- and middle-row occupants, a first in the full-size SW segment. Seating surfaces are upholstered in luxurious leather trim as standard equipment. The front seats are low-back designs with inboard armrests, six-way power adjustment and two-way-adjustable head restraints. Front lumbar adjusters are manually operated. The rear console located between the middle-row bucket seats provides dual cup holders, a cavernous storage area and removable tray. A 60/40 bench seat is available for those interested in transporting up to three middle-row passengers. This seat has two-way-adjustable head restraints for outboard passengers, a reclining seat back and a fold-down center armrest with two cup holders. In addition, all or part of the seat back can be folded to increase storage. A memory system retains up to three settings for the power driver's seat and the electrically heated outside mirrors. In the event an interior or under-hood lamp is left on, a battery-saver feature automatically switches it off after 40 minutes. Basic safety equipment includes driver and passenger air bag supplemental restraints and three-point lap/shoulder belts for all outboard seating positions. Shoulder belt height adjustment is provided for front- and middle-row outbound passengers. Rear-door child safety locks, intrusion-resistant door beams, and speed-sensitive interval wipers are also standard equipment. A third-row bench seat providing space for three more passengers is standard. Navigator can seat up to eight people. By removing the third-row bench and folding the second-row bench seat, the cargo volume can be stretched to 116.4 cubic feet. The 4x2's payload capacity is 1,800 pounds; the 4x4's, 1,600 pounds. Tie-down hooks recessed below carpet height and a removable net that can be positioned up to beltline height help secure cargo. Storage bins are built into the rear sidewalls. Navigator offers a top-notch level of comfort and convenience features. Among these: Solar-tinted and privacy glass blocks infrared rays from Navigator's interior. That reduces heat build up and fabric fading in sunny climates. The standard AM/FM stereo audio system has a cassette player, four speakers, and duplicate controls--both in the steering wheel (volume, memory, band selection) and at the rear of the console for second-row passenger use with supplied headphone jacks. A premium 290-watt audiophile sound system with cassette deck and seven speakers is available along with a six-disc disc CD changer (mounted in the center floor console bin. Power door locks and windows are provided. There's a one-touch driver's window for convenience at such stops as a toll booth, bank or restaurant drive-through window. After the ignition is switched off, accessory power is available for 10 minutes (or until a front door is opened) to close the windows and the optional moonroof. Remote keyless entry is standard equipment. The SecuriLock passive anti-theft system uses a specially coded ignition key to thwart vehicle theft. Any attempt to start the vehicle without the proper key automatically immobilizes the engine. Electronic speed control has a tap-up/tap-down feature to provide more comfortable cruising. Options include an electrochromic inside rearview mirror that automatically cuts glare from rear headlamps at night and a power moonroof. The overhead glass panel can be opened fully with one touch or tilted up for extra ventilation. A universal garage door opener built into the driver's sun visor is included with the moonroof option. Auxiliary climate control also is offered as optional equipment without the moonroof. Heating and air conditioning is delivered through the headliner for increased comfort of second- and third-row passengers. Five registers--three ahead of and two behind the second-row seats--add comfort. Redundant controls are provided: one set for the driver and another in a pod over the second seat. Genuine burled walnut wood accents are fitted on the Navigator instrument panel, floor console front tray and door trim surfaces. Navigator's wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel also includes duplicate audio and climate control switches. |
