Is the '98 Subaru Forester a compact station wagon or a mini SUV? Formally classified as a small station wagon, the Forester performs as well as most full-size SUVs. The number of SUV owners that actually venture off-road is amazingly small, yet people want to look like they could barrel down a treacherous road at a moment's notice. The Subaru Forester has many traditional full-size SUV styling cues, yet it sits far closer to the ground. Although this stance sacrifices points in the macho department, it more than makes up for that with excellent ingress and egress, car-like handling, and its ability to fit in any garage. The interior is comfortable and filled with storage compartments, cup holders, and auxiliary overhead lights. Air conditioning is standard.
On the highway and around town, the Forester was as comfortable and convenient as any compact wagon. It's an excellent daily driver. And when we took the Forester off-road under very harsh weather and terrain conditions it was as seamless as driving on the highway, but with a lot more bouncing and splashing. The Forester is an ideal winter weather and skiing vehicle. The Subaru Forester is an excellent choice for people who want the safety of full time all-wheel-drive, the economy and practicality of a compact wagon, and rugged SUV-type styling. |
