Description: Sporty and economical might seem like contradictory concepts, but Ford has managed to package plenty of both in the all new 1998 Escort ZX2 two-door coupe. The ZX2 is exclusive to Ford dealerships, and there isn't a Mercury version. This ZX2 is almost the same size as the Escort sedan, but it's a little longer, lower, wider, and a whole lot better looking. The sporty looks might be enough to challenge other competitors, but the ZX2 has a fine engine (the 130 hp 2.0-liter twin cam 16 valve Duratech four-cylinder that is normally found in the Ford Contour) and improvedhandling to match the good looks. The 5-speed manual transmission would be our choice for extracting the engine's maximum potential, although an optional 4-speed automatic is also available. The high quality interior is comfortable and versatile with the split, folding, rear seat backs. The trunk is almost as large as the sedan trunk. The interior has three cupholders and a center console. With the exception of the radio, most comfort and convenience features are optional. This helps to keep the base price affordable. We put a thousand miles on our test ZX2 in a week's time. Those miles included a non-stop, 300 mile, cross-state streak over steep mountain passes--and the trip was quiet and comfortable. We got over 30 mpg while averaging 75+ mph. Fuel economy is even more impressive with less spirited driving. The Escort ZX2 should be a big hit with younger buyers and anyone else who wants an affordable, practical car with zip. |
