Description:
We're a society consumed with being number one: America is a nation of score keepers, record breakers, and self-promoters. We quantify almost everything, so being numero uno can be a fleeting achievement--unless you're talking about America's best-selling truck. That honor has been decisively captured by Ford F-Series pickups for so long that the F-Series nameplate has eclipsed all others as the world's best-selling vehicle. Over 26 million F-Series trucks have been purchased in the past 50 years.
The F-Series pickups have been the Number One selling car or truck in America for 16 straight years simply because they're great trucks. Ford pays lots of attention to quality and innovations--they haven't become complacent about being number one. The F-150 was extensively redesigned in 1997; 1998 changes are minor refinements. Our F-150 Flareside test truck was as comfortable as most cars. Spartan, rough-riding trucks aren't part of the F-Series lineup. Interior room is incredible even for very tall people. Ergonomics, visibility, and quality control are first rate. The cab is loaded with well- designed storage bins and four cup holders. The passenger side airbag has a locking switch so it can be turned off when a child carseat is used.
Three state-of-the-art engines are available. Our truck had the Triton 4.6 liter SOHC V-8 which produces an impressive 220 hp and 290 ft.-lbs. of torque. The performance and healthy exhaust note reminded us of the Mustang GT. The test truck had the 5-speed manual transmission with a somewhat balky shifter. We preferred the 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The handsome bed had a locking tailgate and a bed liner with built-in tie-downs. The exterior styling and chromed 16-inch wheels look very contemporary. The '98 Ford F-150 Flareside is an excellent choice for anyone who wants car-like comfort with the cargo capacity of a truck.
