Description: The 1998 GMC Jimmy 2-door 4x4 is classified as a compact SUV, but it's considerably larger than mini SUVs. It's big enough to be comfortable, but small enough for off-road agility. The GMC Jimmy is one of the few SUVs available as a 2- or 4-door with either four- or two-wheel-drive. The two body styles appeal to different customers, so GMC offers four unique suspension packages. The 2-door Jimmys get the most rugged version. The 2-door Jimmys cater to younger, more adventuresome buyers. The lack of rear doors is great for infants, but it's annoying for people old enough to be trusted with door locks. Two-wheel-drive Jimmys would serve most SUV owners' actual needs, but they're lacking in the status department. We Americans are notorious for favoring image over value. The 2-door Jimmy accommodates four passengers. It's slanted "C" pillar blocks the rear passengers' and the driver's view. And the high-back rear seats and full-size rear-mounted spare tire block even more of the rear view. The good news is that other vehicles' headlights are barely noticeable. Except for rear seat access, the interior is quite well- executed. Storage bins, cup holders, and auxiliary interior lights are everywhere. The front seats are very comfortable with their manually adjustable lumbar support. The sole Jimmy engine is the 190 hp Vortec 4300 V6. Our test vehicle had the 4-speed automatic, but a 5-speed manual is also available on 2-door Jimmys. The four-wheel-drive Insta-Trac system is electronically controlled and shift-on-the-fly. The 2-door Jimmy is very competent in rugged off-highway situations. The '98 GMC Jimmy 2-door is a practical sized SUV for daily driving that offers a great deal of sport for weekends. |
