It's a mid-sized sedan, it's the middle model of the Galant lineup (DE, ES, LS), it's larger than the Mitsubishi Mirage and smaller than the Diamante
- 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited--Hot Rod Jeep - The '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD with the 5.9-liter V8 engine may look like a traditional SUV, but it sounds like a hot rod. The 245 horsepower engine delivers 345 pound-feet of torque, sports car acceleration, broad smiles from the driver
- 1998 DODGE NEON R/T - POCKET ROCKET - Small, economical cars don't have to be slow and boring. The Austin Mini Cooper proved that, until federal safety standards halted importation. That 'pocket rocket' tradition lives on in the 1998 Dodge Neon R/T. The R/T designation previously

Description: The 1998 Ford Expedition XLT is aptly named-- it would be a great vehicle for an actual 'expedition' with its large passenger capacity and ability to handle rugged terrain. Unfortunately, most Expedition owners make shorter treks to the grocery store, soccer practice, and such. The Expedition handles those duties very well, but it's overkill. The '98 Expedition is the modern version of the sixties Ford Country Squire station wagon, but with four wheel drive added and fake wood paneling deleted. The great American station wagon isn't dead, it was reincarnated as the sport utility vehicle. The SUV market is so crowded with different-sized vehicles that you can almost buy them deli-style, by the foot. Ford positioned the Expedition between Chevy's Tahoe and Suburban. The Expedition is easier to maneuver than the Suburban (the Expedition can carry nine passengers) and it has more passenger and/or cargo capacity than the Tahoe. There's a trade-off between hauling passengers or cargo. With the optional third seat installed there's precious little space behind the seat. The third seat accommodates adults, but they won't be happy if the trip is very long. The second row is quite spacious and comfortable. The optional front leather Captain's seats make a superb command post. The interior ergonomics and quality are first-rate. The Expedition is very smooth and easy to drive for a 17 foot-long, 2 1/2 ton SUV. However, it won't fit in every parking space or garage and its size can hamper serious off-road driving. Our test Expedition was equipped with the optional 230 horsepower 5.4 liter V-8. Power was adequate, but not outstanding. Gas consumption was alarming; 11-12 mpg on paved roads, lightly-loaded, in two-wheel drive. The high fuel costs add to the near 40 thousand dollar list price. We had mixed feelings about the Expedition; it's a well-built, comfortable, capable SUV, but it seemed an excessive amount of truck for daily driving. The smaller Ford Explorer would work as well, or better, in most situations. |
