Description: An unbeatable combination of passenger and cargo space, power and luxurious comfort attracts loyal followers of the full-size sport utility favorite, Suburban. This year's enhancements promise to solidify the ever-growing customer base for this fast- selling, people-pleasing, people mover. The biggest sport utility on the market, Suburban seats up to nine with the wide-seated comfort of a first-class cabin. Outstanding cargo space of up to 149.5 cubic feet leaves Suburban unrivaled in its ability to carry the belongings of today's active families. "Together with the ultimate in passenger space and cargo capacity, Suburban's offerings in 1998 are sure to satisfy full-size sport utility lovers," said Dennis O'Donnell, brand manager for the GMC Suburban. "New for 1998 is a PassLock theft-deterrent system, a standard Autotrac pushbutton active transfer case on four-wheel drive Suburbans and transmission enhancements that improve efficiency and fuel economy while reducing vibration and noise." Standard on four-wheel-drive Suburbans is the new Autotrac active transfer case (ATC) which offers drivers state-of-the-art, on-demand technology in addition to the traditional two- and four-wheel-drive high, neutral and four-wheel-drive low functions of the electronic shift transfer case. Pressing the "Auto 4WD" button puts the vehicle in four- wheel-drive standby mode. When a condition occurs requiring four-wheel drive, sensors detect wheel slippage and apportion greater amounts of torque to the front wheels until the rear wheels regain traction. If continuous rear wheel slippage occurs for a sustained time, the system will automatically go into "4 Hi" mode to protect the actuator motor. The transfer case can be left in "Auto 4WD" on all surfaces without damage or wear occurring. Suburban owners are sure to appreciate this new feature which enhances vehicle traction and driver control. To increase vehicle security, Suburban features a new, standard PassLock theft-deterrent system. The vehicle uses a special lock assembly and decoder module which require a valid key for operation. If the code is sensed and matched, the PassLock module sends a "continue fuel" message to the vehicle control module. If the code does not match (as in a theft attempt), a "disable fuel" message is sent. If unauthorized use is attempted, the vehicle is locked out from further starting attempts for ten minutes. A luxury convenience package is available on SLT models. The package includes: 3-channel Home Link transmitter Touring ride (46mm Bilstein shocks) Heated driver and front passenger seats Heated electrochromic outside rearview mirrors Six-way power front passenger seat New exterior badging on Suburban's rear door reads "GMC" in ruby red, replacing the "GMC Truck" logo. Standard equipment for Suburban is a Next Generation air bag for the driver and front seat passenger, significantly reducing the likelihood of injury in a forward collision for those who are properly restrained by their lap and shoulder belts. The air bag is neatly integrated with the flowing contour of the instrument panel just above the Suburban's large glove box. Suburban passengers ride in cool comfort with standard front and rear air-conditioning on SLE and SLT models and optional with SL trim. The system allows rear seat occupants to cool down faster and maintain adequate airflow and temperature. Outlets are located in the headliner and on the two window shades above the rear seating area. Control knobs for the rear air-conditioning system's fan blower motor are located in both the front and rear seating areas. The auxiliary rear heater is also standard on SLE and SLT models. Hydra-matic 4L60-E transmission enhancements implement a new two-piece transmission case that provides increased powertrain stiffness and results in reduced vibration and noise. An electronically controlled converter clutch (ECCC) increases fuel economy while maintaining driveability. Transmission efficiency is improved by software that compares engine/vehicle operating parameters and sets precise transmission line pressure accordingly. A deeper transmission oil pan improves overall transmission durability and fluid life. Suburban'sRlectronic variable-orifice (EVO) steering results in excellent road response and feel. Speed sensitivity gives the Suburban low effort at parking speeds and higher effort at cruising speeds for greater control. Other benefits are improved fuel economy and lower power steering fluid operating temperatures which extends fluid life. Suburban's 290-horsepower Vortec 7400 V8 (L29) features sequential port fuel injection that delivers best-in-class power and torque. The standard 255-horsepower 5700 V8 offers GM's patented sequential central port fuel injection (SCPI), which provides high-precision fuel control for optimal cylinder-to-cylinder distribution. SCPl's highly efficient fuel delivery method improves cold start and hot engine restart and takes fuel control at idle to world-class. Suburban's optional 6.5L turbo-diesel engine utilizes an electronic fuel injection control system. A powertrain control module (PCM) ensures that the engine, transmission, electronic throttle control, and electronically controlled fuel injection pump perform optimally to increase fuel economy, eliminate black-and-white exhaust, improve cold- weather starts and idle quality, and reduce noise levels. This year, the L65 diesel revs up with increased horsepower to 195 and torque to 430 Ib-ft. In addition, more accurate diesel fuel level information appears on the display cluster due to improvements that reduce gauge fluctuation. (Increased horsepower and torque will be introduced intermin the 1998 model year.) The comfort of Suburban second-seat passengers is improved with the addition of height- adjustable shoulder belts for occupants. In the interest of reliability and operational convenience, the Suburban's vehicle control module manages cooling fan operation and additional aspects of the air-conditioning system. The cooling fan is automatically deactivated whenever a certain road speed is exceeded to reduce both the noise level and the electrical load. After the engine is shut off, the cooling fan continues to run to reduce radiator boil over. With severe cooling requirements, the air-conditioning compressor is deactivated. The vehicle control module also avoids bouncing back and forth between HVAC system modes. Suburban owners can appreciate the long-life ignition system that is virtually maintenance-free for 100,000 miles. The system's platinum-tipped spark plugs, low- resistance spark plug wires that increase conductivity, composite distributor housing and stem, and high-voltage switch that requires no timing adjustment help keep it trouble-free over the long haul. Add to that a long-life engine coolant, a single 100,000-mile accessory belt, damperless springs and lip stem seals (valve train), and a robust water pump and seals, and you can count on a worry-free driving experience. Like all other GMC vehicles, the 1998 Suburban is covered under GMC Commitment Plus. Customer benefits include a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty, Premium Roadside Assistance for on-the-road emergencies, courtesy transportation for same-day warranty service and travel benefits including free trip routing. |
