Description: Introduced in 1994 as yet another mold-breaking design from the newly revitalized Chrysler Corporation, the 1998 Dodge Neon retains its unrivaled combination of fun-to-drive characteristics and overall practicality. Already known for its class-leading handling, power and generous interior room, the Dodge Neon enters 1-998 with an exciting R/T performance package, along with new feature packages that make this small car an unbeatable value. All Neons for 1998 benefit from refinements aimed-at reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels, including a new transmission housing structural collar. The 1998 Neon also complies with California's stringent Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standards, and joins other Chrysler cars in adopting next-generation air bags. "What sets Neon apart from the rest of the pack is that no other small car out there can offer such a high blend of power, styling, handling and overall 'fun-to-drive' quotient," said Joe Caddell, General Product Manager, Small Car Platform. Recalling Dodge's famed "R/T" performance models of earlier eras; the 1998 Dodge Neon R/T features a full-dress package -- all for a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of less than $14,000. This package offers true R/T level performance, and includes most of the hardware that led the Neon to two SCCA Class "C" Showroom Stock National titles in 1995 and 1996. Underneath its special "Viper stripes" with a Flame Red, Intense Blue or Bright White exterior color is a 150 horsepower, 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve engine with a performance-tuned engine controller. This "pocket rocket" powerplant is mated to a quick-shifting five-speed manual transmission. Inside, the Dodge Neon R/T carries on its performance driver theme with unique bucket seats, leather steering wheel cover and leather shift knob. Keeping the R/T flat in the corners is a sport suspension with- unique springs and sway bars both front and rear, along with new rear spring isolators. A responsive 16:1 steering gear ratio, four wheel-disc brakes, and unique polished aluminum 14-inch wheels round out the package. Also new for 1998 are reclassified model offerings for both the Neon Coupe and Sedan. "This is part of our effort to evolve the entire product line and give the customer more refinement and content for his or her money," said Ron Zarowitz, Neon Planning Executive. "We've accomplished this without sacrificing Neon's inherent attributes of go-kart like handling and over-all fun-to-drive characteristics. " The value story for 1998 is solidified with the elimination of the "base" model. The high content "D" package (or "highline") now represents the entry-level vehicle. With a long list of standard features, including upgraded interior, low-back bucket seats, remote trunk release, and fold-down rear seat, the Neon is an exceptional value. The "G" package Neon "Sport" rounds out the offerings and includes the robust 132 hp 2.0-liter - SOHC engine (the 150 hp 2.0-liter, DOHC engine IS options, special exterior graphics, 14-inch sport wheel covers, fog lamps, "Tango" cloth interior, plus all of the "D" package features. "A well equipped 'G' package, including the potent 150 hp engine, can be had for the cost of most entry-level Japanese brand competitors," noted Caddell. "Dollar for dollar, Neon is tough to-beat." |
