Description: The Dodge Intrepid enters 1998 as a completely redesigned sport sedan that reinforces the strong design and brand lineage instilled in Chrysler Corporation's performance brand more than five years ago. The all-new Dodge Intrepid reflects the Dodge brand's signature of offering sporty, performance-oriented vehicles with its sleek, more muscular design. It's overall design cues will be recognized from the Intrepid ESX show car unveiled last year--marking another link between concept and production vehicles that has become a hallmark for both the Company and brand. The 1998 Dodge Intrepid is as bold and innovative as the first-generation model that was heralded as one of the industry's landmark designs. "The 1998 Dodge Intrepid is for those who want an exhilarating driving experience, yet who also need a sedan that can comfortably seat five or six," said Ray M. Fisher, General Manager of the Dodge Division. "Add to that - a choice of more powerful engines with better fuel efficiency and even more interior and trunk room, and you have the formula for a car that is both passionate and practical--the perfect combination." Incorporating Dodge's distinctive brand "signature" was a key element from the very earliest stages of developing the all-new Intrepid. "From the moment the go-ahead is given on a new vehicle, we work closely with our colleagues in design," said Fisher. "Reinforcing our brand identification through visual elements- is the way we not only come up with a striking design, but preserve the styling cues that are part of every member of the Dodge family." Specific design traits seen in the 1998 Dodge Intrepid include a bold 'cross hair' grille--now a trademark of all Dodge vehicles--as well as a bold stance from any angle and a cockpit-style-interior. The Intrepid has been given a 'fast' roofline that gives this sedan a coupe-like appearance. "We wanted to see how far we could abstract the Dodge theme and still have it readily apparent that it's a Dodge," said Robert Boniface, one of the lead designers of the all-new Intrepid. "Our starting point was a sideview that was a very streamlined arc from nose to tail. The design team wanted to make sure the car had a seamless, purity of design with no gimmickry. These are qualities that - make a design timeless." The Intrepid's redesign for 1998 extends far beyond its distinctive profile, starting with a series of all new aluminum engines that are up to 25 percent more powerful and 10 percent more fuel efficient than the engines they replace. An all-new, aluminum 2.7-liter, 24-valve V-6 engine will power the Dodge Intrepid. Rated at 200 horsepower, this new engine boasts the highest horsepower-per-liter rating in its class. The Intrepid ES will be powered by an all aluminum 3.2-liter V-6 that delivers 220 hp. The 3.2-liter V-6 is more powerful and lighter than the current-generation 3.5-liter V-6 engine. All Intrepid ES sedans will be equipped with the AutoStick performance feature that lets drivers shift gears without-using a clutch. The 1998 Dodge Intrepid will be produced at Chrysler's Bramalea Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, and go on sale this fall. |
