Description: For 1998, Chevy Astro continues to offer impressive accommodations and versatility, along with improved features that make it even better. The rear- wheel-drive Astro is a favorite with van buyers who need more room and capability than typical front-wheel-drive minivans offer, but don't want the bulk of a full-size van. In fact, for 1998, Astro is the only midsize van out there. Offered as both a passenger van and a cargo van, the roomy rear-wheel-drive Astro has more cargo and payload capacity and a greater trailer towing rating than any typical front-wheel- drive minivan. And now Astro, with new security and operating enhancements for '98, is an even better choice. A new addition on the security front is the Passlock~ theft-deterrent system, standard on every 1998 Astro. This system disables the ignition, preventing further starting attempts for ten minutes if an invalid key (or no key) is used. Astro owners will also enjoy an improvement in driveability for 1998, thanks to an enhanced automatic transmission. New this year is an electronically controlled torque converter clutch for improved efficiency and a two-piece transmission case for increased stiffness, reduced noise and less vibration than in previous years. For added exterior protection, Astro features an improved clearcoat paint (interim availability) that helps reduce damage from water-spotting, acid rain and environmental etch. Three new exterior colors are offered for 1998: Medium Cadet Blue Metallic, Dark Copper Metallic and Dark Forest Green Metallic. Dark Copper Metallic and Dark Forest Green Metallic are also new cladding colors. Astro continues to offer a comprehensive list of standard safety features for 1998, such as dual air bags, a 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) and Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), which make it easier to see Astro during the day. Impressive Vortec power is found under the hood of all models. A Vortec 4300 V6 with Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI) powers Astro, providing a hardworking 190 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque, which is more than enough power for all sorts of cargo hauling and towing needs. And, speaking of hardworking, Astro is the only van in its class that offers rear-wheel drive, a definite plus when it comes to towing. When properly equipped, Astro has impressive towing capacity as much as 5,500 lbs. A capability that none of the front-wheel-drive vans can match. A full-time All-Wheel Drive model also is available, which offers impressive on-road traction in all kinds of weather conditions. The variety of seating arrangements available for Astro is proof positive of this midsize van's versatility. Customers can choose from five-, seven- or eight-passenger seating, in different trim levels, depending on their needs. Plus, with as much as 170.4 cu. ft. of available cargo room with the rear seats removed, Astro has the space to get the job done. Astro also offers a high seating position for the driver and front- passenger, for an increased feeling of security and control. Another important part of the Astro versatility story is revealed in its doors. Designed with easy loading and unloading in mind, Astro features a 57-inch-wide rear door (Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager offer only 49.1 inches) and 34.5-inch-wide side door openings (Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager offer only 30.4 inches) along with a low-level cargo floor. And, for those who need something a little different, Astro offers optional rear Dutch doors, a one-piece liftgate window with split-panel doors below. This exclusive Astro feature (excluding other GM vehicles) offers the versatility of a double rear door with the generous visibility of a full rear window. A rear wiper/washer is included with the Dutch door option. Comfort and convenience are certainly not lacking in Astro. Standard front air conditioning, Scotchgard Protector on cloth seats and floor covering and passenger assist handles for easy entry and exit are just a small sampling of all that Astro has to offer. In keeping with its versatile image, Astro is a part of the Chevy Truck official sponsorship of the U.S. Ski Team. With an available All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model, rugged towing and hauling capabilities as well as a comfortable and spacious interior, Astro meets the needs of the U.S. Ski Team very well. The AWD Astro also fits the enthusiastic, world-class competitor image of its other sponsorship, the Sarah Will Women's Sports Foundation. This group is dedicated to providing competitive athletic challenges to people with physical disabilities. Astro is an important part of one of the most complete family of vans in the industry, with Astro Passenger Van offering an ideal choice for families that need a multi-purpose van for daily driving and weekend excursions, and Astro Cargo Van providing a perfect solution for commercial users who require dependability and power along with impressive payload and towing capacities. Other "family members" include the full-size Chevy Van, Chevy Express, Chevy Venture and Chevy Venture Cargo Minivan. Chevy Astro offers rugged performance, more than ample space and an impressive list of standard features. The 1998 Chevy Astro... midsize versatility at its best. |
