Description: Already equipped with an impressive array of standard features not normally found in the subcompact category, for 1998 the Hyundai Accent sports a new look at the front and rear while retaining advanced technology, often found only in more expensive cars. The Accent appeals to a wide range of buyers -- from first-time purchasers to young singles and growing families -- remaining at the top in safety, styling, driveability, reliability and affordability. The 1998 Accent three-door is available in three models: Accent L, Accent GS and Accent GSi, which replaces the Accent GT. All models receive new front and rear bumper fascias, tail lamps, bodyside moldings and wheel covers. Four new colors, including Island Green, Plum Mist, Cherry Red and Cool Silver, are now available on all models. The four-door Accent also gets a new hood, halogen headlights and rear decklid to further improve the car's excellent styling. Hyundai engineers have made the 1998 model even quieter than last year's vehicle through improved technology. The engine and transmission roll mounts have been relocated to reduce vibration, while new engine and radiator mounts further minimize vibration and idle noise. Finally, a new four-point power steering bracket replaces the previous three-point version further reducing power steering noise. The three-door GS and four-door GL models already host a wide range of standard equipment, including five-mph bumpers, P175/70R-13 tires, deluxe full wheel covers, tinted windows, five-way adjustable driver's seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, cloth door trim inserts, deluxe carpeting, tachometer, digital clock and body color rear garnish. Power steering is now standard equipment on all GS, GL and GSi models. The sporty GSi model comes equipped with P175/65HR-14 performance tires, alloy wheels and a sport-tuned suspension. Power windows and dual power mirrors are also standard on the GSi model in 1998. Exterior amenities include a new bodycolor rear decklid spoiler, lower cladding and integrated front fog lamps. Sporty full-cloth seat fabric and cloth door trim inserts, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and available moonroof add to the sporty appearance of the GSi model. Accent once again exceeds the entry level buyer's expectations by continuing to focus on features and technology that consumers typically expect to find on higher-end vehicles. With state-of-the-art features such as supplemental dual airbags, five mile-per-hour energy absorbing bumpers, fully independent front and rear suspension and a low maintenance engine design, the Accent fits in the best buy category for the sophisticated yet value-conscious consumer. Technology The Accent is powered by a 1.5-liter Hyundai designed and built four-cylinder engine that produces 92 horsepower at 5500 rpm. The low maintenance engine design saves consumers both time and money. Technological advances such as the distributorless ignition and self-adjusting valves are part of this design. Roller-type rocker arms and needle bearings minimize engine friction and noise. The engine's three valves per cylinder -- two intake and one exhaust -- blend for an exceptional combination of response and economy. Last year, thanks to its self tuning engine, Accent was rated as the vehicle with the lowest maintenance cost in its class by the Car Book. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard on the Accent. Optionally available (except on "L" models) is a four-speed automatic transmission with sophisticated, electronically-controlled operation which provides smooth shifts. When equipped with a manual transmission, Accent chalks up 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, according to EPA fuel economy figures. With automatic transmission, the Accent gets 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The Accent's fully independent suspension, which utilizes MacPherson struts with offset coil springs in the front and a rear multi-link design with coil springs, is another example of technology not commonly found in the entry-level segment. Stabilizer bars are also incorporated at both the front and rear of the vehicle. With safety the foremost goal in the minds of Hyundai engineers, the Accent comes standard with dual airbags, side-impact protection and front and rear crumple zones. A full four-channel anti-lock braking system is available with the automatic transmission. Rack-and-pinion power steering, standard on all Accent models (except "L" models), contributes greatly to the vehicle's precise road feel and excellent handling capabilities, while an optionally available power-assist unit enhances driving comfort. Hyundai offers all Accent owners a comprehensive warranty and roadside assistance program at no additional cost. The warranty program includes a generous three-year/36,000 mile limited warranty, a five-year/60,000 mile limited powertrain warranty and a five-year or 100,000 mile corrosion coverage. The roadside assistance program goes beyond what most competitors offer and includes emergency towing, lock-out service and limited trip interruption expenses as well. Comfort, Convenience and Style Ergonomically designed to provide maximum comfort and convenience, the 1998 Hyundai Accent includes height adjustable front shoulder belt anchors and a full center console with cupholders as standard equipment. Additional conveniences include remote fuel door release, intermittent wipers, passenger visor vanity mirror and front door map pockets. The contoured dashboard has also been engineered for easy driver access to comfort controls and radio dials. An AM/FM cassette radio is now standard on all models. The Accent's flush halogen headlights and dual outside mirrors enhance the already sporty appearance. Environmentally Aware Ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been eliminated from Hyundai's manufacturing process and air conditioning systems. Environmentally friendly R134a refrigerants are used in the air conditioning systems of all Hyundai vehicles. Hyundai has also eliminated the use of asbestos in gaskets, brakes and clutch pads in the Accent and all plastic parts are stamped with internationally-recognized identification symbols to facilitate recycling.
