Description:
Buick's LeSabre carries an unsurpassed record of market success into the 1998 model year -- as the best-selling full-size sedan in the United States for five straight years.
"The continuing strength of LeSabre is in its hundreds of thousands of owners who are among the most loyal in the country," said Joseph J. Fitzsimmons Jr., LeSabre brand manager.
"LeSabre meets the needs of those customers with its solid reputation for safety, quality and value -- and it has won independent awards in those categories to back up that reputation. LeSabre is also noted for its comfort, modest purchase price, excellent fuel economy -- 30 miles per gallon on the highway -- and virtually no scheduled maintenance, except for oil changes, for up to 100,000 miles."
Over the last nine years, LeSabre has rated highly in a number of independent quality and value surveys.
As examples, in the 1997 model year, LeSabre was awarded the IntelliChoice "Best Large Car Value" title for the fourth consecutive year. It also won the Strategic Vision "Best Large Car Total Value" award. Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine presented LeSabre its second consecutive "First for Safety" award in the $18,000 to $25,000 category.
For 1998, LeSabre has a significant safety, security and convenience option -- GM OnStar. OnStar is an in-vehicle communications system combining Global Positioning System satellite technology and a hands-free, voice-activated cellular telephone to link drivers to a center where advisers are available to provide many kinds of assistance, such as emergency services and navigational and travel support. OnStar, which is a dealer installed optioned, also provides automatic notification of air bag deployment and stolen vehicle tracking.
The six-passenger LeSabre features the 205-horsepower (at 5200 rpm) 3800 Series II V-6 engine. LeSabre is newly equipped with the 4T65E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, with an electronically controlled capacity clutch, which is smoother and more fuel efficient than the previous transmission. The engine was rated by Ward's Auto World magazine in 1997 as among the "10 Best Engines" for the third straight year. Projected fuel economy for 1998 is 19 miles per gallon city and 30 mpg highway.
For 1998, 3800 Series II V-6 engines are equipped with various emissions control improvements.
The powertrain features low maintenance as well as durability. Engine coolant has a recommended change interval of 150,000 miles. Platinum-tipped spark plugs have first recommended service at 100,000 miles. The transmission fluid requires no change for the life of the car under normal operating conditions.
Cruise control, which was previously standard on LeSabre Limited, is now standard on Custom as well. On Limited, a new option is heated outside rearview mirrors (electrochromic with automatic dimming on the driver's side).
LeSabre provides standard features such as anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, power windows, rear-window defogger and the PASS-Key II theft-deterrent system. Any attempt to start the car without the matched ignition key is denied by the powertrain control module's programming.
For 1998, all Buicks feature driver and front passenger Next Generation air bags, which have reduced force. The less aggressive air bags, made possible by a change in federal safety regulations, will improve overall vehicle safety for all occupants.
LeSabre's Personal Choice features remain optional on Custom and standard on Limited. The remote keyless entry fob allows each of two drivers, using separate fobs, to activate pre-programmed settings for memory door locks, delayed locking, security feedback and perimeter lighting.
LeSabre offers Convenience Plus electrical features such as delayed entry and exit lighting; "theater dimming" interior lamps; battery rundown protection; delayed locking; lockout protection on power door locks; reminder tones for the parking brake, turn signals, headlamps and ignition key; PASS-Key II theft-deterrent system; Twilight Sentinel with daytime running lamps.
Both LeSabre Custom and Limited offer a Gran Touring package with heavy duty suspension, 16-inch aluminum wheels, magnetic variable effort steering, 3.05 axle ratio, Goodyear Eagle GA P215/60R16 blackwall tires, leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic level control.
Four new colors available for 1998 are Twilight Blue Metallic, Midnight Blue Pearl, Emerald Green Pearl and Slate Green Pearl. There is one new interior color, Medium Blue. |
